Author/Paleontologist to Visit Hance During Author Month
Nationally known author and paleontologist “Dino” Don Lessem will make a visit to Hance Elementary School on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 during the school’s Author’s Month program. Lessem, who has authored more than twenty books and is an advisor to Jurassic Park and Disney Dinosaur films, will visit with students all day talking about writing and his work.
-
The author will host small group and assembly gatherings and will have lunch with students. Students have been reading his books, as well as other books about dinosaurs.
- Each grade level is working on different projects and learning activities to prepare for his visit. Second graders are painting dinosaur habitats and placing dinosaur cutouts in the scenes. Third graders are researching different dinosaurs, writing facts about them, and creating dinosaur egg mosaics.
- Participants in GATE and fourth graders are creating a display case of fossils. Fifth graders are making geometric dinosaurs, combining geometry with dinosaur structure.
- Art Teacher Kerry Boyd and his students created a 3-D tyrannosaurus rex for a life-size display in our lobby. Life skills assistant Eileen Brennan is making a large paper diplodocus for the walls of the front lobby as a way to welcome the author.
