Project Inspires Family Time & Goodwill
A school activity is inspiring students to help the community.  Students and staff have been working on a “One School: One Book” initiative.  They’re reading the book “Macaroni Boy,” authored by Pittsburgher Katherine Ayres. The book centers on the life of a 12-year-old boy, whose Italian family runs a food wholesale business, during the Depression era.  On Tuesday, March 6th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Hance Elementary will host a family activity night called “Macaroni and More”. Students to Solve Mystery of Missing Colors

Students at Hance Elementary will become super sleuths on Friday, March 23, 2007. They will help solve the mystery of missing colors when they participate in a high-energy, interactive multimedia show that uses a super-hero, comic-book-style theme to teach students about light, energy, reflection, pigments, and color perception.  The assembly  “The Great Color Caper” was conceived and developed by Science Center education specialists for children in grades K-8.  Dr. Richard Pysch, Hance Elementary Principal, says the project was made possible through an $850 grant from PPG Industries. Students at Hance in grades K through first will participate in an assembly from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m., grades three and four will participate in the program from 11 - 11:45 a.m. and fifth graders from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. (Read More…)

Target Awards Teacher with $1,000 Grant

Target awarded Richland Elementary Music Teacher Jill Linsz with a $1,000 grant.  Linsz hopes her project will help expand student’s learning beyond the classroom, so they can witness firsthand the works of famous artists and musicians from Pennsylvania. On May 25, 2007 fourth graders will travel to the Westmoreland Museum of American art, where they will engage in a variety of activities led by museum staff and docents.  The project “The Arts & Pennsylvania: Making A Connection” will integrate the “arts” and show students the rich, cultural heritage of PA.  Target launched the Target Field Trip Grant Program in September to bring learning to life outside the classrooms. Judges only funded 800 projects of the 16,000 project ideas that were pitched to them.

Two special guests will be making an appearance at Richland Elementary School 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007 in the school library.  Parent Tammi Grumski will be visiting Teacher Lauren Aiello’s first grade class to read a book about how the Pittsburgh Penguin made his home in Pittsburgh. Along with her Pittsburgh Penguins mascot “Iceberg” will join her when she reads to children.
