This year, the middle school is working hard to improve the overall reading skills with all of our students.  We believe that reading comprehension is a critical skill that allows our students to be successful at the middle school and the high school level.  In order to chart our progress, we will be conducting a formal reading assessment with all middle school students.

Specifically, we will be administering the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test 4th Edition during the week of January 18.
Click here for important details outlined in a letter from Dr. Harrington.

Lost & Found

Check It OutOur lost and found has never been so full at this time of year!  We have four large trash bins heaping with clothes.  If your child is missing articles of clothing, please stop by the middle school and go through the lost and found before it's donated to a local charity.  All items will be organized and displayed in the hall behind the office during the week of January 19-22.  Mark your calendars and plan to stop by that week to go through the lost and found.  Anything unclaimed after January 22 will be sent to a charity.

8th Grade Kennywood Trip!

Seeking Sponsors

KennywoodThe Pine-Richland Middle School 8th Grade is seeking sponsors for the T-shirts worn during the Kennywood Field trip in May.

Each year the costs of transportation and admission increase thus increasing the cost per student.   Last year's donations helped defray a portion of the cost to the student.  This year, the class is again asking for sponsors to reduce the per student cost.  If you, your employer, or a business owner you know would like to sponsor one or more homerooms, contact
Mr. Bailey via email or phone 724-625-3111 ext. 416 for more information.

Due to the time it takes for ordering and printing the shirts, please make your commitment by March 31, 2010.  Sponsors will be listed on the backs of the shirts.

Health Office

January News & Notes

from School Nurse Karen Halliday

I hope everyone is feeling rested and relaxed after our holiday break. Dr. Chips will be doing the seventh grade school dental exams on Monday, January 25.  You were sent a notice home if your child had not returned their private dental form.  If applicable, please send to school the school dental exam permission form by January 19, 2010.  If your child will be examined by his/her own dentist, please send the completed
exam form as soon as possible.

Keeping your medicine cabinet safe is an important part of managing your overall health.  Over-the-counter medications and prescription medications should be checked on a monthly basis for expiration dates, as they lose their effectiveness when used past this date.  This is especially important with rescue medications such as Epi-pens and inhalers.

As always, please see me or call me with any questions-724-625-3111, ext 2.

Mathletics Camp

It's almost that time to begin thinking about how you are going to spend your summer vacation!  How about becoming a MATHlete and participate in the third annual Mathletics Camp.

For the past two summers, Mr. Aglietti and Mr. Frank conducted a math program that focused on the fundamentals of Algebra I.  Students' math careers take them from Algebra I, to Geometry, then to Algebra 2.  This program is designed to help bridge the "year off" between Algebra I and Algebra 2 by focusing on the major concepts essential to be successful in Algebra 2.

Due to an overwhelming response to the Mathletics Camp after the first year, we now offer an additional Mathletics Camp for students who have successfully completed Algebra I and will be taking Geometry beginning in the fall of 2010.  This program is designed to focus on the skills learned in Pre-Algebra and Algebra that are crucial in being successful in Geometry.

Location, dates, and times have not been determined.  Email us now to guarantee a spot.  Contact
Mr. Frank  or Mr. Aglietti to sign up now.  Start out the new school year ahead of the game...be a MATHlete!

Eighth Grade Recognition Video!

The Eighth Grade Recognition (Friday, May 28) will be upon us before you know it.  We're starting to collect photos for the video that will be presented at the Recognition Ceremony at 10 a.m. that day.

Please send a photo or two of your student that you would like to be included in the video.  Group photos that contain several eighth graders are particularly fun!  Remember that only appropriate photos will be included, and the selection of photos is up to the recognition committee.  Due to time constraints, we cannot include every photo.

Please mark your photos with the name(s) of the students pictured, and include the name of the person to whom the photo should be returned.

Thank you!  Questions?  Contact
Brenda Nigh.

Ink Cartridge Recycling
