Professional School Counselors
The professional
school counselor is a Master’s level, certified educator
trained in school counseling. These professionals have the unique
skills to address all students’ academic, personal/social
and career developmental needs. Professional school counselors
implement a school counseling program that promotes and enhances
student achievement.
Mission
The Mission
of the Pine-Richland Guidance Program is to meet the personal,
social, educational and career development needs of all students,
helping them to reach their potential by providing a developmental,
sequential and comprehensive program which includes instruction,
prevention, intervention services and consultation with our clients.
Theory
Ten years
of research have identified a cluster of skills as those that
are critical to school success. “These skills include:
(1) Cognitive and meta cognitive skills such as goal setting (self-efficacy),
progress monitoring, and memory skills; (2) Social skills such
as interpersonal skills, social problem solving, listening, and
teamwork skills; and (3) Self-management skills such as managing
attention, motivation, and anger.” Professional
school counselors identify these three skill sets as the most
powerful predictors of long-term school success, which separate
high achievers from low achievers. These skills can be taught
individually, in small groups, or in large group instruction.
Professional school counselors may deliver a school guidance curriculum,
teaching classroom lessons designed to help students achieve these
kinds of competencies, knowledge and skills, appropriate for their
developmental level. In all of these activities professional
school counselors have direct contact with students, helping to
maximize students’ achievement and potential.
Professional
school counselors work directly with students, through individual
and group counseling. In individual counseling, any students who
are having academic problems, are grieving, anxious, depressed
or encountering stressful life changes can have immediate access
one-to-one to a counselor who is trained to assess, intervene
and/or refer. Professional school counselors work hand-in-hand
with parents and guardians in these situations to find the best
solutions and support for children.
Many times,
professional school counselors also work “behind the scenes”
collaborating with other professionals to remove barriers which
are blocking student achievement. Working within educational teams,
school counselors consult with teachers, parents and others on
the team to coordinate necessary interventions and actions. Professional
school counselors bring an expertise in the consultation role,
to help students work through their challenges and issues by utilizing
their extensive background in children’s social/emotional
and educational development.
*As students
progress from elementary school to high school, in addition to
these skill sets, students begin the journey on their individual
career or higher education track. Middle and High School professional
school counselors are critical helpers in Individual Student Planning
for each student and in the application process to vocational
schools, colleges and universities. Professional school counselors
have the expertise to help students navigate the many choices
included in post-graduate planning.
The American
School Counselor Association (ASCA) empowers professional school
counselors with the knowledge, skills, linkages, and resources
to promote student success in the school, the home, the community,
and the world.
