Slippery Rock University
Professional Development School

Hance Elementary School has formed a relationship with Slippery Rock University(SRU) as a Professional Development School. As a part of this relationship, Hance has been invited to collaboratively develop an after-school tutoring program with Dr. Claudia Balach and her students from SRU.

Dr. Balach’s students attend classes at the university, but their practice/assessment requirements are embedded within after-school math tutoring for identified Hance students in grades 3-5. Assessment data and teacher input are analyzed to determine which Hance students will be invited to participate inthe after-school math tutoring.

Hance staff work closely with the university students and Dr. Balach to discuss our curriculum and to plan for focused tutoring sessions. College level students conduct math tutoring one day a week for a period of seven weeks. The sessions include an informal time for homework and snacks and formal, focused math tutoring by SRU students and supervised by Hance staff. A pre and post math assessment test is given to all students for the purpose of diagnostic, instructional planning.

Parents are responsible for picking up their students after each session. If you would like your child to participate in the SRU After-School Math Tutoring Program or if you have any questions, please contact Dr. Richard Pysch, Principal or Mrs. Barb Cornibe, Math/Literacy Coach or your child’s teacher at 724-443-1541.
