Middle School Band

Motto: Quality Pride = Quality Results

Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 may choose band as a performing ensemble. Classes are currently taught during the Homebase period.  Students may choose to participate in no more than 2 performing ensembles.  Prior knowledge of a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument is required; however, if private lessons are obtained prior to the beginning of the fall semester, a student may begin an instrument in the 6th grade.

Students will perform in a Winter and Spring concert, learning a variety of musical styles and techniques, and developing their skills through scale studies and challenging pieces.  Students in grades 7 and 8 have the opportunity to audition for honors bands in the area, including PMEA District Honors Band, Northern Area Honors Band, and Allegheny Valley Honors Band.

Grades are based on three areas: Achievement, Attitude, and Attendance.  Students are required to practice their music, and use a practice chart to record their minutes each week.  This chart must be signed by the student and a parent, and turned in at the end of each 9 weeks as part of their band grade.  If you have lost your practice chart, you may print one from the following link:

Private lessons are recommended to further challenge and enhance a student's musical ability.  For teacher recommendations, contact one of the band instructors below.

Jazz Band

Any student who is enrolled in the middle school band may audition for the Jazz Band.  If selected, members of the jazz band rehearse once per week after school to develop reading syncopation, jazz styles, and learn basic improvisation.  Auditions are held early in the fall semester.
