PRMS Students Earn Third Place in
National Science Bowl Competition

Several Pine-Richland Middle School students took third place in the National Middle School Regional Science Bowl Competition. Eighth graders Jonathan Marks and Peter Pearson and seventh graders Maggie Burris and Thomas Ferrell took third place in the competition that took place at two locations on March 7, 2008.

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car race, the first competition, was held at North Allegheny’s Baierl Center in Wexford and the Science Quiz Bowl, the second competition, was held at LaRoche College in McCandless Township. Fifty schools participated in the all-day competition. PRMS GATE teacher Leah Reddinger says students were quizzed in a fast paced format similar to the game show Jeopardy!

Students had to design, build and race model cars powered by hydrogen. The National Science Bowl is sponsored by the US Department of Energy and is a nationwide academic competition that tests student knowledge in math and science. Students who sponsored the program in addition to Reddinger included PRMS GATE teacher Kathy Deal and PRMS design technology teacher Mark Cadamore.
