School Board Members Visit A.W. Beattie
On October 23, prior to their regular school board meeting, members of the Pine-Richland School Board toured A.W. Beattie and watched a demonstration in the surgical sciences lab by instructor Mrs. Vincenzina Olszewski.
A.W. Beattie’s surgical sciences program prepares aspiring surgical technologists, profusionists, anesthesia technologists, nurses and doctors for post-secondary education and training. Students learn aspects of dressing wounds and sutures, sterile processing and surgical assisting.
The program balances classroom instruction with hands-on lab work. Students learn fundamentals of anatomy while also completing hands-on projects such as constructing a 3D model of a lung. In the lab, students participate in a simulation of laparoscopic surgery, which Mrs. Olszewski demonstrated for members of the board.
In addition to earning college credit, surgical science students have an opportunity to shadow at UPMC St. Margaret. Most graduates go on to four-year postsecondary pre-med, nursing, nurse anesthesia and physician assistant programs. The program also prepares students to go directly from high school into a career in sterile processing.
