Opioid Antagonist
On March 17, 2025, the school board approved Policy 823 Opioid Antagonist. The Pine-Richland school buildings have Naloxone stocked in the health offices with written orders and a procedure by the school district’s physician, Dr. Domenic Mantella. This information is supplied for purposes of fulfilling Board Policy 823’s requirement of annual notification to parents/guardians. Naloxone will be available for immediate administration as an emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose, where respiratory and/or central nervous system depression is present. This shall be available during the school day when the Licensed Nursing Staff is available. Naloxone would be administered to a person suspected of an opioid overdose with respiratory depression evidenced by slow respirations or no breathing (apnea) or unresponsiveness to stimuli (such as calling name, shaking, sternal rub). Students and staff should report a suspected overdose directly to the school nurse and/or the principal.
**1972 Act 64 provides protection from criminal prosecution provided by law for persons who report a suspected overdose using their real name and remain with the overdosing person until emergency medical services (EMS) or law enforcement arrive, as well as for the person whose overdose they report. In addition, it provides protection from civil liability provided by law for persons who report overdoses or administer an opioid antagonist in overdose emergencies.
