Important Attendance Reminder for Parents

Sept. 7, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Over the first few weeks of the school year, teachers, students, and families establish those routines and procedures to help ensure students are ready to learn each day. Examples include evening and morning routines to maximize rest, homework routines to prepare for the next day, and healthy eating routines to make sure their bodies are fueled and ready to go.

These routines are good for the mind and body and help improve student attendance in school.  The educational program offered by the district is predicated upon the presence of the student and requires continuity of instruction and classroom participation in order for students to achieve and grow.  In short, consistent attendance in school matters.

New this year and as part of the Pennsylvania Every Student Succeeds Act Consolidated State Plan, each school will receive a regular attendance calculation, which will be reported via the Future Ready PA Index in addition to statewide assessment performance.

In an effort for all school districts across the state of Pennsylvania to follow similar attendance procedures, beginning this school year, any student who misses more than 50% of a school day will be considered absent for the day.  Parents will continue to see the time their student signed in or out of school in Home Access, however, if the student did not complete at least 50% of the school day then the attendance code will be absent.

*An early dismissal and a late arrival could be counted as an absence if the total number of instructional minutes are not met.

**The number of required instructional minutes is fewer at the high school than the middle school due to period lengths and transition time differences.

School staff will continue to work closely with students and families who are experiencing chronic absenteeism.  Please contact your child's school counselor or building administrator if you need assistance or have any questions.
