District Welcomes New Administrators
Pine-Richland School District is welcoming two new administrators to the team. Ms. Kelly Gustafson will join the Wexford Elementary School as its new principal, and Ms. Paula Giran will join Eden Hall Upper Elementary School as its newest assistant principal. Both were approved at the board meeting on June 4, 2018.
Ms. Gustafson has been serving as the coordinator of elementary education at Greensburg Salem School District for the past four years. Prior, she served for 11 years as principal of Bower Hill Elementary School in Peters Township School District and has worked as a principal in the Bentworth and Kane Area school districts. At Bower Hill, the school was named a National School of Character because of her strong involvement in the development of character education connections throughout the building’s curriculum and culture. Before serving in administrative roles, Ms. Gustafson worked as a special education teacher in South Middleton School District in Boiling Springs, Pa., and West Allegheny Middle School.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Ms. Gustafson,” said Dr. Brian Miller, Pine-Richland School District superintendent. “She has a strong background in professional development and much experience at the building and district levels. Her focus on students and staff combined with her enthusiasm and positive energy will be an asset to Pine-Richland.”
She has organized many professional development opportunities for staff and has served on several curriculum development and strategic planning committees. She has served as an advocate for literacy and Pennsylvania school libraries for the past three years.
“It is with great honor and excitement to have been selected to join the Pine-Richland School District,” said Ms. Gustafson. “I am thankful to have the opportunity to bring all that I have experienced and learned with me to your wonderful community.”
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education of the Exceptional from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Pittsburgh. She earned her principal certification from Duquesne University, where she is working on a doctorate in the Professional Leadership and Development program.
“As I begin my first school year as Principal of Wexford Elementary, I will embrace the challenges of the future while I continue to cherish and celebrate the traditions of the past,” said Ms. Gustafson. “Not only am I excited to begin meeting the children, but I look forward to the work we will do together as a school.”
Ms. Giran has been working in the Norwin School District as a fifth and sixth-grade gifted education coordinator since 2013. Prior she served as a fifth-grade math and science teacher and a fourth-grade teacher in NSD. She has helped with many district-wide initiatives including being a STEM lead teacher and a comprehensive planning committee member.
“We are looking forward to having Ms. Giran join our team at Pine-Richland School District,” said Dr. Kristen Silbaugh, assistant superintendent for elementary education & curriculum. “Her leadership and initiative in both in STEM and gifted education will be beneficial and add value to Eden Hall Upper Elementary School and the District. Additionally, she is well-prepared to lead and engage our fourth through sixth-grade students, as her experiences have been aligned precisely to that age group.”
“I am honored to become a part of the Pine-Richland family,” said Ms. Giran. “As assistant principal at Eden Hall, I am looking forward to connecting with students, families, and staff in order to carry out the district’s mission. I am excited to see what we will be able to accomplish.”
Ms. Giran earned a Bachelor of Science in Family & Consumer Sciences from Seton Hill College with certifications in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and Business, Computers & Informational Technology; a Master of Education in STEM Education from the California University of Pennsylvania. In addition, she earned her principal certification from Point Park University.
Ms. Giran will replace Ms. Greta Kuzilla, who was promoted to serve as the principal at Hance Elementary as Dr. John Mayberry retires. Ms. Gustafson is taking Dr. Rick Walsh’s place. He was promoted to assistant superintendent at Plum.
