Students Tap into Creative Side During Summer

(June - July 2018) Students are tapping into their creative side this summer. Students are spending their summer break working on murals and honing their writing skills.

Writing Workshop
Elementary students participated in the annual writing workshop at Eden Hall Upper Elementary School. The Young Writers Institute (YWI) was hosted at PRSD at Eden Hall. This is the sixth year PR hosted the program.

"The YWI is for students who enjoy writing," said YWI program coordinator Kathy Giegel, Richland Elementary teacher. "It is an opportunity for them to experience many different genres of writing in a supportive community of fellow writers."

In addition to Mrs. Giegel, other participating educators who taught included:

  • Kathy Giegel, Richland Elementary Teacher
  • Bonnie Allessi, Richland Elementary Teacher
  • Joanna Firmin, Wexford Elementary Teacher
  • Beth Shenefiel, EH Librarian
  • Deb Newcomer, Retired PR Teacher
  • Jen Mazzocco, Pittsburgh Public School Teacher

The writing workshop was sponsored by the Pine-Richland chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of Gifted Education. During one lesson, students were encouraged to examine their hands with a magnifying glass and write about it. This year's guest writer was Tess Barry, an internationally published poet.

"We had many PR kids attend, as well as kids from surrounding school districts and homeschoolers," said Mrs. Giegel.

Mural Painting

Students are bringing a little more color to the Eden Hall Upper Elementary School library. From June 11 - June 14, 2018, students rolled up their sleeves, designed and painted the library mural that is located in the reading nook area. The mural was started last year and students are adding birds such as a hummingbird, roadrunner, swan and more!
