Principal 1st Quarter Message

Dear Families:

As we approach the end of the first quarter, we have an opportunity to reflect on the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year. We welcomed back a large number of students and opened our doors to kindergarten students and families new to Richland. Parent nights were well attended, which aided in having a smooth transition into the school year.

RAMS Way was one of our most significant changes in the school. RAMS Way is our school-wide, positive behavior and intervention support framework that was implemented throughout grades K-12 in Pine-Richland. Students learned what it means to be Respectful, Accountable, Motivated, and Safe in various areas, such as the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, restroom, and bus.

Please view and listen to the brief podcast below for a general overview of our RAMS Way!

Another area of focus is the creation and implementation of refined STEAM lessons. We were fortunate to create a STEAM Lab through funding from a PROF grant. Now, our teachers are working collaboratively to design engaging learning opportunities for our students.

We have also implemented the use of new resources throughout grades K-3. For example, we are now utilizing Amplify science, which is a comprehensive program that provides hands-on opportunities for students, while also integrating reading, thinking, and writing.

Finally, students will begin to notice some physical changes in the building. We are currently undergoing a total renovation of the restrooms in our first-grade wing. Additionally, new curtains and rigging equipment will be installed in our auditorium later this fall. Rigging equipment is all of the hardware used to lift, lower, and hold performance equipment on or above a stage.

Regardless of whether recent changes are structural, tangible, or philosophical, we emphasize continuous improvement as we strive toward our mission to focus on learning for every student every day. I believe the Pine-Richland reputation as a leader in quality education begins at our primary schools, and I am proud to be the principal of Richland Elementary School. Thank you for your continued support!

Respectfully,

Dr. Gene Nicastro, Principal
Richland Elementary School
