Field Hockey Athlete selected for Olympic Development Tournament
Upcoming PR senior Rylie Wollerton was selected to compete in the USAFH Next National Championship for Field Hockey, also known as the 2021 Nexus Championship.
This selective tournament is the result of a three week Olympic developmental program, which Rylie was invited to attend. At this program, the selected athletes worked with professional coaches to improve upon field hockey skills at the high school level, collegiate level, and even Olympic level.
At the end of the developmental program, an additional weekend of training was held to assess the top field hockey athletes. Five different locations were set up around the United States for the selected athletes to attend. While there, coahces and judges looked to invite the top 40% of each age bracket to compete in the 2021 Nexus Championship. In total, 720 female athletes, including Rylie, were selected to attend this tournament, which will be held from July 6th to July 14th in Virginia Beach, Va.
This five game tournament will allow for the athletes to compete at a higher level of play and work with the USA Field Hockey’s coaching staff. This staff will then assess and select players for various Junior High Performance opportunities.
During Rylie's junior year on the 2020-2021 PR Varstiy Field Hockey team, Rylie was named a Play Safe/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) High School Player of the Month in September 2020. She was recognized for collecting 44 points on 19 goals and six assists in one month to earn the distinction of September’s High School Player of the Month. She was also named the Post Gazette Player of the Year and competed at the AAA First Team All State championship.
Rylie will be returning to PRHS in the fall to complete her senior year. After that, Rylie is already committed to play field hockey at the University of Louisville.
