Eden Hall Students Make Final Architectural Apprenticeship Presentations
On Friday, January 27, sixth grade students at Eden Hall Upper Elementary School made their final presentation in the Architectural Apprenticeship at Chatham University Eden Hall Campus. Students presented to representatives from the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation and Chatham University as well as to professional architects.
The students were tasked with converting the Morledge House Garage into a bike shop, outdoor recreation space or space to support the university’s farm team. Designs were required to be sustainable, preserve the existing building and meet the needs of the client (Chatham University). Students worked under the supervision of Mrs. Sovek and Mrs. Kopach as they had frequent check-in meetings with clients and architects in order to meet the expectations of the project.
Throughout the four month program, students were asked to produce different types of drawings at ⅛” scale, a model of the redesign at ¼” scale, and a final presentation of ideas, drawings and models using TinkerCAD, a 3D digital design platform. The program kicked off in September with an opportunity to tour the garage, meet with clients to understand their needs, and time for research on green building, environmental sustainability and repurposing old buildings.
