Updated Message for Our Seniors

Graduation Update for Seniors and Families

May 27, 2020

Dear Parents of the Senior Class of 2020:

Over the past weeks, we have been sending updates related to our plans for graduation. Throughout this period of closure we have, and will continue to rely on the input and recommendations from county, state, and federal healthcare experts (Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD], PA Department of Health [PADOH] and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]), to protect our students and their families.

As of this message, Allegheny County is in the yellow reopening phase. Proactively, we shared a detailed contingency plan with ACHD for conducting a modified graduation ceremony following strict social distancing guidelines and health/safety measures. This plan had included a reduced number of guests for each graduate. The feedback from ACHD was to continue to follow state and federal guidelines. Current state guidelines for counties in the yellow phase prohibit gatherings greater than 25 and green phase guidelines recommend restrictions to large group gatherings. Even with limiting the number of spectators, our event would include over 1,000 people. Referencing current federal CDC large community events recommendations, at a minimum to moderate level of community transmission, large group events should be limited to less than 250 people.

Due to current guidelines from all of our health and safety sources, the June 5th graduation ceremony will be a virtual event. Since our closure began in March, we have been working with our staff and students to develop a virtual graduation ceremony. The ceremony will include every aspect of a traditional ceremony including student/staff speeches, student performances, and pictures displayed of each graduate. It will be aired on PRTV and streamed on the PRSD website on Friday, June 5, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. This approach will ensure that graduation occurs as planned on June 5, 2020. Family members from around the world will be able to participate in honoring all of our graduates.

Additionally, in collaboration with our senior students, we have identified Friday, July 24, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. with a rain date of Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. as alternative, face-to-face graduation dates. This ceremony would be similar to the traditional in-person event to help recognize students and provide an even deeper sense of celebration to this important milestone. Throughout the summer weeks, we will continue to monitor county, state, and federal guidelines to determine what options may exist. We will keep students and families updated as information is available.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our seniors and families on Wednesday and Thursday of this week as they pick up their diplomas, awards, and take pictures in their caps and gowns. We are so excited to see them on campus. We have learned that although disappointed and frustrated, our seniors are resilient young ladies and gentlemen who are ready for the next chapter of their lives.

Please do not forget about the other exciting events scheduled over the next two weeks:
