Pine-Richland Middle School eighth-grader Vaughn Spencer (168 lbs) earned the National High School Coaches Association National Middle School Wrestling Championship on April 25, 2021, at Virginia Beach, Va.
Vaughn, like his older brother Cole, became a Middle School National Champion and All- American. Vaughn won all 4 matches he wrestled. He had 3 pins and a dominating 15-0 win in the finals over Zach Zindle of Massachusetts.
In addition, at nationals, sophomore Anthony Ferraro earned a fourth-place title (113 lbs). went 5-2 in a bracket of 72 wrestlers on his way to place 4th and become an All-American. Anthony had a win over state champion Clay Gates of Oklahoma and an impressive 4-0 win over Tyler Chappell of Seneca Valley who is currently ranked 17th in the country.
Kelin Laffey (152 lbs) won 5 matches and dropped 2 close decisions, falling one match short of becoming an All-American. Kelin, in his first match, pinned state champion, Nick Sanko of New York who is ranked 18th in the country, and later beat Drake Rhodes an undefeated state champion from Montana.
At the Ohio Tournament of Champions, eighth-grader Dominic Ferraro earned a second-place title (114 lbs). The Ohio Tournament of Champions is America's largest one-day youth wrestling tournament. Dominic's bracket had 19 wrestlers from 8 different states.
