Students Participate in National Signing Day

Several Pine-Richland High School athletes participated in National Signing Day. Read more about the aspirations on and off the field.

Field Hockey

 

Alora SharronPlayer
Christopher Newport University
Senior Alora Sharron signed to play field hockey at Christopher Newport University, where she will major in business & marketing. The midfielder was named Rookie of the Year in 2015 and a scholar-athlete four years. She has been a four-year varsity starter, varsity captain and named to the 2017 high school national academic squad and was a scholar of distinction. In 2018, she earned WPIAL Honorable Mention. She is a national merit scholar, earned a business award and earned highest honor roll. She volunteered her services to work in Peru and helped volunteer with the PR Field Hockey Youth program.

"Being given the opportunity to continue playing the sport I love means a lot to me, and I am extremely grateful," said Alora.  "I look forward to playing at a higher level and making new friendships as being a part of a team. I am excited that I still have another four years to play. My younger sister, Alexa Sharron, is also a field hockey player that I was lucky enough to play with throughout high school. I will miss playing by her side, but I can’t wait to see what else she will bring to the Varsity Field Hockey team!"

 

 

Football

Player Michael Dorundo, II
Duquesne University

Senior Michael Dorundo signed to play football as an offensive lineman at Duquesne University, where he plans on majoring in biomedical engineering. In high school, he earned All-State in addition to earning All-Conference twice. He earned the highest honor roll and was a two-time Future Business Leaders of America State qualifier. He served as an FBLA treasurer and a student government officer. He helped the team earn two WPIAL championships and a state championship.

"The opportunity to be a student-athlete at Duquesne provides me the opportunity to continue playing football, the sport that I love while pursuing my education in engineering at a great university," said Michael.

 

 

 

Player Merrick Miller
Denison University

Senior Merrick Miller signed to play football as a linebacker at Denison University, where he will be a pre-med major. He helped the team earn two WPIAL championships and a state championship. He earned the highest honor roll through all four years. He is a volunteer at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. 

"Denison University is a perfect fit academically and athletically," said Merrick. "It gives me the chance to compete in a strong football program at a great academic school. Denison University is the first step to becoming an Optometrist and managing my own practice."

 

 

 

Player Tyler Rudduck
Washington & Jefferson College

Senior Tyler Rudduck signed to play football as an offensive left tackle at Washington & Jefferson College, where he plans to major in Business.  He helped the team earn two WPIAL championships and a state championship.  He was named IMG Player of the Week his senior year as a varsity player. 

"This opportunity means a lot," said Tyler. "I’m happy and excited to continue to play the sport I love at the next level."

Youngstown State University
Senior Dylan Stenson signed to play football at Youngstown State University as a wide receiver and defensive back. He helped the team earn two WPIAL championships and a state championship.

Signing Michael Katic
Indiana University
Senior Michael Katic signed to play football at Indiana University.  The offensive guard helped the PRSD team to earn two WPIAL titles and a state championship. He will study business at Indiana University.
"This scholarship is providing me the opportunity to play Big 10 football while earning a first-class education," said senior Michael Katic.

US Naval Academy
Senior Tyler King committed to play football at the US Naval Academy. The senior is an All-State, First Team All-Conference player during his junior and senior years. He helped the team earn two WPIAL championships and one state championship. He also served as the team captain. While playing football, he was able to earn the highest honor roll. He was selected to play in the International Bowl.
"This opportunity means I will receive the highest level of education, play football in a very competitive conference, and serve my country," said senior Tyler King.

Notre Dame
Senior Andrew Kristofic committed to play football at Notre Dame.  The offensive/defensive tackle will major in business and play on the Notre Dame team as an offensive tackle. He was named a US Army All-American. He also earned First Team All-State, All WPIAL, All-Conference.  He was also named one of the Fabulous 22. He earned honor roll status all four years. He helped the team earn two WPIAL championships and one state championship. He was selected to play in the  All-American Bowl.
"I am honored and excited for this opportunity to play football and study at Notre Dame," said senior Andrew Kristofic.

Baseball

Student Jared Armstrong
High Point University

Senior Jared Armstrong signed to play baseball at High Point University. He will play second base and shortstop. He earned his varsity letter his junior year and made all-section as an honorable mention during his junior year. He has achieved the highest honor roll all throughout high school and was a member of the National Honors Society junior and senior years. He has logged more than 100 hours by serving on the Wolfe Pack organization helping others.
“This offer means I have earned and been given the opportunity to play Division I Baseball while earning a degree,” said Jared.

Student Josh Johnson
Kent State University
Senior Josh Johnson signed to play baseball at Kent State University, where he will study physical therapy. As an outfielder, he lettered all four years as a varsity player. He was named to the Second All-Team Section in 2017 and as All-Section Honorable Mention in 2018. He also helped his team earn the WPIAL Championship Title in 2017. He maintains a high grade-point average.

“This offer means the world to me because I worked so hard to achieve this,” Josh said. “IT means so much that I have been given the opportunity to play at the next level.”

Student Troy LaNeve
Vanderbilt University

Senior Troy LaNeve signed to play baseball at Vanderbilt University, where he will study psychology. He helped the team earn a WPIAL Championship Title in 2017. He was named First Team All-Section in 2017 and Second Team All-Section in 2018. He earned a spot on the 2017-2018 Future Stars National Team and was a TEAM USA Alternate in 2015. He earned honor-roll status in high school and is a member of the Wolfe Pack and served as a volunteer in the Jubilee Kitchen. 
“This means everything to me and my family,” said Troy “My parents provide so much for me and this offer is something I have earned for them. In my eyes it is what I can do to give back for all they have done.”

Student Matthew Wood
Penn State University

Senior Matthew Wood signed to play baseball as a catcher at Penn State University, where he will study business management. He helped lead his team to a WPIAL Championship in 2017 and was named to the 1st Team All-Section in 2018. He earned the highest honor and is a member of the Wolfe Pack, which does service projects.
“Signing to play at Penn State Univesrity means the world to me,” Matthew said. “I worked very hard on and off the field and receiving an offer from a school that is the perfect fit for me is a great feeling.”

 

 

Field Hockey


Student Lauren Peterman
Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Senior Lauren Peterman signed to play field hockey for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she will major in secondary English education. At PR, she helped lead the team to a WPIAL Championship and twice as a WPIAL Runner-Up. She is an honor roll student and has assisted with the Pine-Richland Youth Center Field Hockey program.  “It is important because I will be the only player from Western PA on the IUP team,” said Lauren. “It's a chance to show how far the sport has come on this side of the state.  It gives me an opportunity to do something I love in a new environment. I would like to thank all the people who have helped me grow as an athlete and student. PR has left me with some of the greatest opportunities, and for that I am thankful.”

Golf

Student Lauren Freyvogel
Penn State University

Senior Lauren Freyvogel signed to play golf at Penn State University, where she will major in business. She is the captain of the varsity team and earned the 2017 PIAA AAA State Golf Championship; the 2017 West Region Golf Championship & the 2017 Tri-State PGA Qualifier Junior PGA Championship. Academically, she has earned the highest honor roll every quarter in high school and was named to the 2018 American Junior Golf Association Transamerica Scholastic Honor Roll and named a three-time Esmark High School All-American. She has volunteered 70 hours of church-related service work. “I’m so excited and honored to join the women’s golf team at PSU after I graduate from high school,” Lauren said. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to pursue my                                                                academic studies and my passion for golf at such an amazing university.”

Lacrosse

Student Senior Ben Barnes
Seton Hill University
Senior Ben Barnes signed to play lacrosse at Seton Hill University, where he plans to major in cybersecurity. He was named Varsity Rookie of the Year in ninth grade and was selected to the 2016 Brine National Lacrosse Team in represented Pennsylvania. He has earned multiple honor-roll distinctions. He serves as the varsity team captain and is a member of the Best Buddies Club.

“I am honored to be continuing my education at a nationally recognized university while continuing my play at the next level with such a great lacrosse program and coaches,” said Ben.

 

Athlete Senior Carly Switala

signed to play lacrosse at Shippensburg University, where she will study biology.  She helped the team earn the WPIAL Championships in 2017 and 2018. She is a four-year starter for the True Lacrosse Travel Team.

 

She is a merit scholar, a scholar-athlete awardee and earned the highest honor roll. She is a member of the National Honor Society and co-chair of the MiniTHON Fundraising Committee. She has served for the Mission from Mars outreach program and participated in the Appalachia Mission Trip.

“This opportunity means so much to me because I have grown to love this game and can’t even imagine ending my career after high school. I am so thankful for this chance to play in college,” Carly said. “Thank you to all my friends, family, teammates, and coaches for supporting me and pushing me to get better!”

 

Soccer

Student Alaina Kalin
Indiana University Bloomington
Senior Alaina Kalin signed to play soccer at Indiana University Bloomington, where she will study criminal justice. She has been named to the Big 56, All-WPIAL, and All-Section Teams. She earned the highest honor roll all four years at Pine-Richland High School. She serves as the captains of the PRHS Girls Soccer Team.

“It means so much to me because I have been working for this basically my whole life,” said Alaina.

 

Volleyball

Student Madelyn Schieder
Villanova University

Senior Madelyn Schieder signed to play volleyball at Villanova University, where she will study communications.  She has been named 1st Team All-Section, 1st Team All-Big Section for two years and a four-year varsity letterman. Academically, she earned the highest honor roll for all four years. She services as the vice president of the Spanish Club.

“I have been working for this much whole life; it is the best feeling to accomplish the goal of your dreams. It’s the sport I have fallen in love with,” said Madelyn.
