It was a first for Pine-Richland High School Varsity Wrestling Team. They entered the North Hills Duals as a young team with no seniors but managed to bring home an unblemished 5-0 record over the competition on December 15, 2018.
The victories over Central Catholic, Penn Hills, Highlands, Gateway and section rival North Hills earned the Rams the tournament Championship for the first time in team history! New head coach Caleb Kolb with Assistant Coaches Tom McGarity and Rob Hunt, lead a motivated team that earned many individual trophies as well.
Luke Levendusky earned the most pins in the shortest amount of time award with 4 falls in just under 4 minutes with the fastest one coming in just 12 seconds. Cameron Fletcher and Zach Esswein, both 5-0 on the day, were pivotal in the narrow 42-29 win over North Hills. The victory by Esswein over an opponent that beat him just the week before earned him the MVP of the tournament and the trophy that went with it.
The young Rams, led by captains Cole Spencer and Nate Lukez, traveled to Knoch Wednesday, December 19, 2018, in a section match before the Christmas break. The wrestlers will enjoy little time off as they travel over the break to the second toughest tournament in the country, Powerade, located at Canon McMillan on December 28th and 29th. We look forward to seeing as many fans as possible on January 2, 2018, when the wrestlers face off with Mars and will be holding a charity fundraiser, Takedown, for the Troops, as well as their Best Buddies Exhibition.
