Message from Superintendent

April 23, 2020

Greetings to Pine-Richland Students, Staff, Parents and Community,

Our students and families remain at the front of our minds. We shared a podcast last week that outlines five key points related to COVID-19 and educational planning. Please review that message if you have not had a chance to do so. Even as the “flattening of the curve” continues and our country enters the deceleration phase of the novel coronavirus, the CDC and other public health experts warn of the potential resurgence of this respiratory disease in the next upcoming months. Locally, we continue to consult with the Allegheny County Health Department and Pennsylvania agencies to gather updated information.

As we complete the last five weeks of this school year, our thoughts are first with our current students. We think of our seniors and their families. We share the sense of loss that we cannot express some of the sentiments and care in a physical face-to-face setting with our students. We will find ways to meet these important social and emotional needs. Our pupil services department has updated a series of resources to help support academic, social and emotional needs. Our staff has also created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) component to the PRSD COVID-19 website. There is a section devoted to seniors in the Class of 2020. It is important to note that this FAQ will be updated as public health information changes. It is too soon to answer certain questions.

Finally, this month’s update completes the overview of the PR Graduate Portrait. This current experience really serves to highlight how a quality education ensures more than academic content. Although it seems like a long time ago, our focus last month was
Personal Qualities and Characteristics. These characteristics were identified last year by students, staff, parents and the community. The rank order of importance from respondents is located below in the chart on the left. The areas of improvement and growth are noted below in the chart on the right. The top area of focus is valuing other people and cultures.
Importance & Opportunities for Growth
As the final dimension this month, we will ask you to click here to rank order the items (most-to-least important) for types of knowledge identified last year by students, parents and staff.

  • Knowledge
  • Foundation of Academic Content
  • Financial Literacy
  • Career Awareness
  • Independent Living
  • Technology Literacy
  • College & Post-Secondary Information
  • Global Awareness & Understanding
  • Legal & Societal Responsibilities

Please take a couple of minutes to complete this week’s parent survey. This final survey will remain open through tomorrow (Friday) at Noon. We will then take a bit of a break from surveys before we administer our regular, annual end-of-year survey that covers the entire school year.
Thank you for your continued support of the Pine-Richland School District.
