Dear Pine-Richland Families,
 
We are excited to share an update on our assessment reporting process at Pine-Richland School District. This school year, we adopted the Sapphire Student Information System (SIS), opening up the Community Web Portal for parents to access students’ files, surveys, grades, and report cards. As one additional step forward, we are in the initial stages of updating access to assessment scores for parents in one streamlined location. This will eventually include access to PSSA and Keystone performance yet will start initially with our universal screening scores from STAR 360 in our identified benchmark windows.
 
You are now able to access your child’s late spring assessment scores for the STAR 360 for students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. You can access your child’s scaled score and proficiency level by clicking on Assessment Scores on the left menu under Student Backpack in the Community Web Portal.
 
You are an essential partner in the education of your child and sharing this information with you is critical to his or her continued success as a student. If you have questions after reviewing your child’s performance report, please reach out to your child’s appropriate content area teacher. We have included a brief description of the assessments below, as well as links to the rolling scaled score interpretation guides to determine your child’s progress. 
 
More About Star 360
As you may recall from our previous updates:
  • STAR 360 is a universal screener given four times a year (Fall, Winter, Early Spring, and Late Spring) to all K-8 students, which measures both students’ achievement and growth in comparison to their grade-level standards for math and reading.  
  • Students in Kindergarten complete the early literacy assessment, while students in grades 1-8 complete the STAR Reading and Math assessment. 
  • The assessment takes approximately 20 minutes to administer for each content area and is computer-based and computer adaptive. As students answer a question correctly, the rigor of the questions will continue to increase until they miss a question, at which point it begins to decrease the difficulty. At the end of the assessment, the student’s instructional level has been approximated and instructional reports are available to teachers to help them understand which skills a child has mastered or with which they need assistance.
  • These assessments reflect the shortest amount of testing time needed to provide the most accurate results and best data to inform our instructional decisions and design learning opportunities to meet your child’s individual needs. 
  • The information gleaned from the assessments can show performance up to two grade levels above or below a student’s current grade level. The data leveraged is helpful for remediation or enrichment goals within the classroom to be targeted and also allows teachers to plan appropriate learning activities.
  • As continued testing occurs, the range of each student’s performance narrows more tightly on their actual level given the computer-adaptive nature of the assessments, clearly depicting their growth after the third data point.
 
How Parents Can Support Their Children
Parents have inquired about what they could be doing to support their child on these assessments. The most helpful support from home comes from ensuring that your child isn’t nervous about his/her performance on STAR, as it is simply an ungraded tool to help us learn more about what they already know and what they are ready to learn based on skill progression. By meaningfully and intentionally engaging in their classes at school and completing their homework, they are on a solid path of preparation for these universal screeners. Practice items are available at the start of the assessment if the child has not recently taken a STAR test to remind them how to select their answers or advance to the next question. Utilizing the touch screen devices for these assessments has been very helpful, as students can respond easily without operating a mouse.
 
Understanding Developmental Range
The data points that we refer to most when reviewing the reports include the percentile rank and scaled score. These scores allow us to compare your child’s performance to national norms as well as measure a student’s progress against themselves over the course of the school year. This is meant to be a very high-level overview of your child’s performance. For instance, the information you receive for 1st through 8th-grade reading will assist you in appropriately selecting a book within your child’s range of development. The suggested range can be matched to books by consulting reading lists through the STAR/Renaissance BookFinder platform. The search engine is located at the URL below. Follow the steps outlined to find some suggested books.
 
  1.  Navigate to: www.arbookfind.com.
  2. Select “Parent” from the list of individuals.
  3. Click on the “Advanced Search” blue tab at the top.
  4. Select the “Interest Level” that best matches your child, leaving the top book search section blank. 
  5. Enter the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) range reflected on your child’s report (e.g. 4.3 through 7.1), which is their current Book Level (ATOS).
  6. Click “Search.”
  7. Review the titles with your child to determine if any are of interest and use the “Refine Your Search” feature on the left side of the screen to further filter by genre, language, topic, etc.
 
 
Additional Support
If you are interested in more detailed, skill-based information, your child’s teacher will be able to provide you with additional information summarizing the diagnostic performance data. Additionally, any parent interested in setting up an account through the Pine-Richland Renaissance platform to set up an automatic email after a new STAR assessment is completed can do so by following these directions. We hope that this information will prove helpful to you as you support your child’s educational experience at home. Please refer to this link for more helpful tips on how to interpret the scores on your child’s report.
