Important Health and Safety Update

January 27, 2022

Dear Pine-Richland Students, Parents and Staff,

The purpose of this communication is to provide a brief update on the PRSD Health and Safety Plan with a specific focus on the educational model for the rest of the year. Before sharing that update, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and give thanks. The past two years have been challenging in so many ways. The teamwork, collaboration, creativity and sacrifice demonstrated during that time has been incredible. It is our sincere hope that we are nearing the end of this period. It would be great to have a “crystal ball,” but instead we can just continue to listen, learn and adapt. We have had 99.5% of our students in-person all year with continuity in both the instructional model and extracurricular activities.

Per the board-approved revision to the PRSD Health and Safety Plan last month, we are preparing for the transition to a mask optional environment on February 16, 2022. At this point, we are seeing trends at PRSD that mirror the projections by public health experts. In early January 2022, we were averaging 30 positive COVID-19 cases per day for students and staff. The average number of cases has now dropped to 10 per day. We are hopeful that this reduction continues as this most recent wave passes through the community. Active cases are reported on our COVID-19 dashboard. We will also provide case information on January 31st and February 7th during our joint governance and board meetings.

The district is planning to offer a full virtual selection option for families. This would become effective on February 16, 2022. When we conducted a survey over winter break, approximately 80 families expressed interest. We plan to reach out to each of those families in the next week or so to discuss the model design and determine individual student impact. If you did not express interest in the full virtual in the last survey, but would like to do so, please indicate that via this linkWe do not plan to survey all families again.

Importantly, this updated “select and stay” option would cover the time period from February 16, 2022 - June 8, 2022. However, full virtual students would also be able to shift back to the in-person environment at the start of the fourth nine weeks. As conditions hopefully continue to improve, this return date of March 29, 2022 may provide flexibility and benefit for students, parents and staff.

More information about the PRSD Health and Safety Plan will be discussed at the Joint Governance Meeting on January 31, 2022. We will focus on details related to the educational model and transition. Please contact your building principal with questions.

Respectfully,

Brian R. Miller, Ed.D.
