Message from Superintendent
Greetings to Pine-Richland Students, Parents and Community,
The final days of the school year provide an opportunity to reflect on the year and celebrate the achievements of our students and staff. A true milestone will be reached when the Class of 2016 participates in their Commencement Ceremony on June 3, 2016. Graduating seniors serve as a clear example of the achievement and growth that occurs over the K - 12 experience. They have developed individually and influenced others through academics, arts, athletics, and activities. They have made a difference in the community through service and support for a wide range of charities.
In a recent meeting, the following examples were shared:
  • PR Ranks in Top 10 in State & Region (The Washington PostUS News & World Report, and The Pittsburgh Business Times)
  • PR Teacher Named Finalist in Teacher of Year Program - Ms. Patty Cekella
  • Pennsylvania Association of Family and Consumer Science Middle School Earns 2016 Award of Excellence
  • National Robotics Competition Grand Champion (1st Place against high schools and colleges from seven different states)
  • JROTC Competition Event with numerous 1st and 2nd place Awards
  • Numerous Student Awards (e.g., Nordenberg Scholar; Governor's School for Science; Senior Qualifies for National Leadership Conference CompetitionPittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair Awards; and National Scholastic Art Awards).
There are so many good news reports and recognition items in the district for both students and staff. Every single school could be listed with multiple stories and "Spotlight of Learning" segments. It is critical that we pause to celebrate that recognition and more importantly...the opportunity for students to be engaged in diverse learning opportunities.
On behalf of the school board and staff, we would ask that you please invest approximately 10 - 15 minutes to respond to the electronic survey linked to this update. This survey was first implemented last year for the strategic planning process and has been modified slightly based on feedback. It is used as an important listening mechanism for us to evaluate parent satisfaction and engagement. As we continue to focus on the implementation of the strategic plan, your feedback will help us prioritize our actions.
On May 16, 2016, members of the Pupil Services Department at Pine-Richland provided a parent presentation about suicide awareness, prevention, and response. Please use the hyperlinks to view the presentation slides or a more comprehensive set of resourcesOur school psychologists will provide an interactive parent workshop on the topic of suicide on June 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the High School STEAM large group instruction room. This workshop is scheduled to last one hour and will involve opportunities to discuss protective factors, risk factors, and warning signs. Following the workshop, members of the Pupil Services Department will stay to answer individual questions.
Thank you again for your support and engagement in the Pine-Richland School District. Congratulations again to all members of the Class of 2016 and their parents, family, and friends. Enjoy the summer.
