exford Elementary was named to the Healthy Schools PA High Honor roll at a special luncheon on May 5, 2016 for its wellness activities.  Wexford Elementary School was honored along with seven other Pittsburgh area schools including:

· Arsenal Middle School

· Environmental Charter School

· Gateway School District

· Greenock Elementary School

· Mt. Lebanon High School

· Propel Braddock Hills High School

· Spectrum Charter School

· Wexford Elementary School

Wexford Elementary Wellness Chairperson Kristi Wees accepted the award on behalf of the school and thanked everyone for their work and support for serving on the Wexford Elementary Wellness Committee and for their “commitment to making Wexford a healthier place for all our kiddos.”

"I am so thankful to be having this wellness conversation between parents, teachers, and administrators at Wexford Elementary,” said Mrs. Wees. “It is my hope that what we have started talking about and implementing at Wexford can be an initiative that benefits all Pine Richland students through a district wide conversation and focus on wellness."

Mrs. Wees said that Wexford Elementary Wellness Committee spent some time looking at the school environment and used the Healthy Schools Recognition Program report card as a guidance tool to make Wexford a healthier place. The wellness committee invited Program Coordinator Chelsea Holmes, from Healthy Schools PA and Women for a Healthier Environment, as a speaker at one of the committee meetings earlier in the school year.

Dr. Rick Walsh, Wexford Elementary principal, convened a meeting of representative from food service, custodial and facilities, transportation, and health services along with teacher representation to begin to identify what the school was doing positively and to look at what could be improved.

Wexford Elementary tested for radon, tested the drinking water, and started a recycling program. They successfully completed the checklist and as a result was recognized as a High Honor Roll School.

In addition, Wexford Elementary School hosted a Health Fair on May 5, 2016 under the direction of PR School Nurse Mary Beth Chips. Students visited four stations: Med Express, Passavant nurses, Wexford Volunteer  Fire Company and another station with Jackie Greco helping students complete a dance routine.
