District Recognizes Student Accomplishments
Students Qualify for State History Day Competition
Several Pine-Richland Middle School students qualified for the Pennsylvania State History Competition, which will be held on May 12-13, 2017 at Carlisle High School. This year’s theme is “Taking a Stand in History.” Students who qualified earned first through third place at the regional competition held at the John Heinz History Center on March 4, 2017. Qualifying eighth graders included Emerson Dickson, Elaina Camino and Kristen Donahoe, who earned first place in the group website category; Samantha Koch and Halle Jacks, who each earned second place in the individual documentary category; and Michael Allessi, Joshua Rembe and Victor Williams, who earned third place in the group performance category. The district congratulates the students as well as teachers Joe Bailey and Sue Bartley.
PRMS Team Earns First at Odyssey of the Mind Competition
A Pine-Richland Middle School team advanced to the Odyssey of the Mind State Finals at Moon Area School District. The team had to design, build, and operate an original robot that demonstrated human characteristics when performing tasks, which included completing household chores, creating art and dancing. Participating students included seventh graders Miles Brown, Riley Doyle, Genevieve Gaichas, Joshua Katruska, Colby Ohlund, Colin Ohlund and Amish Sethi. Mrs. Laura Ohlund served as a parent coach. Pine-Richland Middle School GATE Teacher Kathy Deal oversaw participation.
High School Team Earns 2nd Place in Marketing Competition
Pine-Richland high School took second place at the International Business Marketing Competition. The team competed against nine other regional teams at the University of Pittsburgh Katz Business School on March 9, 2017. The team had to market a Bayer product called Advanced Aspirina, to consumers in Costa Rica. PR competed against other teams including North Allegheny and Upper St. Clair and earned second place. This is the best rank they have earned in team history. Team members included senior Joseph Mullen and juniors Andrew Park and Benjamin Cohen and sophomores Umyal Natesan, and Bailey Mohri. Teachers Dawn Herbst and Kristin Hough served as mentors.
Junior Named Chapter Student of Year for Fundraising Efforts
Pine-Richland High School junior Sarah Mooney earned the Western Pennsylvania chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society 2017 Student of the Year Award. Sarah raised more than $11,200 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Student of the Year program is a seven-week campaign in which select high school students participate in a fundraising competition to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The candidates/teams who raise the most money at the end of the competition earn the title Student of the Year. The students raise money in honor of a local patient, who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer.
Student Qualifies for State Computer Fair Competition
Congratulations to sophomores Arjan Guglani and Kevin Zhou and freshman Justin Waltrip for competing at the Regional Competition of the Pennsylvania Computer Fair held at the Carnegie Science Center on March 22, 2017. Arjan earned first place and Justin and Kevin teamed up and earned second place. Teacher Ron Schmiedel says first place helped Arjan earn a spot at the Pennsylvania State Computer Finals at Dickinson College on May 22-23, 2017. The Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair is an annual event that highlights student knowledge and skill in computer application. Students can compete solo or with teams of up to three students.

PREA Participates in Service Projects
The Pine-Richland Education Association will be conducting a spring cleanup on April 20 at 4:15 p.m. in front of Eden Hall Upper Elementary and in a 5K on May 20, 2017 at North Park, which generates a yearly scholarship for the Alex Fund. Teachers also generate a $3,000 scholarship each year to a deserving senior.
Students Participate in PMEA Programs
The Pine-Richland High School Chamber Singers will perform at the PMEA All-State Conference at the convention center in Erie on April 20, 2017. Senior Lauren McAllister and junior Gabriel Schoone will participate in the All-State Choir on April 19, 2017. In addition, seniors Alexander Kampas and Julia Solomon are just back from participating in the All-East Band in Atlantic City.
Join AFJROTC Program for Annual Drill Competition
The Pine-Richland High School Air Force J-R-OTC program will host the Third Annual Drill Meet on April 22 at the high school. Visit the PRSD Website for details.
