EH Staff Debut Sensory Room

While autism awareness is part of every day at Eden Hall Upper Elementary, staff members took time to mark National Awareness Month on March 31, 2017.
Autism Awareness Month is celebrated every April and is an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and draw attention to the tens of thousands who receive a diagnosis of autism each year.
Staff members were invited to coffee and breakfast.
Autistic Support Teacher Janice Aloe-Kazalas and paraeducators Jane Diaz, Elaine Hurd, Laura Mefford, Lynne Christy and Kim Kirkland debuted a new sensory room, which is specially designed to combine a range of stimuli to help students develop and engage their senses. Stimuli can include lights, colors, sounds and sensory soft play objects as well as aromas all within a safe environment that allows the student using it to explore and interact without risk.

Ms. Janice Aloe-Kazalas, who organized the kickoff with the help of fellow staff members, says the sensory room was made possible from a special donation of $250 by the Fischer family. Mr. Karl Fischer was also able to add an additional $250 through a matching grant from Google, his employer, to bring the total to $500.
